The basic definition of intercession is Praying the prayers on God’s heart more than the prayers on yours, the suggestion is that we might selfishly pray for ourselves, and the God’s burden is altruistic, purely focussed on need and His perspective of the world He created.
1 Timothy 2:1 says it well ‘I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them’ (NLT).
This reinforces the point that intercession is prayer in the service of others, standing in the gap for them, praying between you and God. Many say that intercession is a privilege, one that goes against the culture of our times, you won’t get a medal for it, there is no celebrity in it, it’s often time consuming and sacrificial to do. Intercession is only for the benefit of those you pray for!
Quote
The privilege of intercession is to pray the heart of God for someone’s benefit.
Prayer
Lord, take me deeper in prayer so that I can serve your heart in intercession, Amen.
Action Point A great book to read about intercession is Mighty Prevailing Prayer by Wesley Duewel.
