Self-control, one of the fruits of the Spirit, is essential to living a life that honours God. Exercising self-control sets us apart in a world that often promotes impulsiveness and self-indulgence. It allows us to respond thoughtfully rather than reacting in the heat of the moment, making choices that reflect God’s wisdom. Galatians 5:22-23 reminds us, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (NASB).
We cannot muster self-control alone; the Holy Spirit nurtures it. Through prayer and dependence on God, we resist temptations and focus on what truly matters. This strength helps us build a character that mirrors Christ’s. Self-control proves that we are submitted to God.
Living with self-control brings peace and discipline into our lives. It allows us to handle challenges gracefully and pursue God’s purposes without distraction, ultimately reflecting His love and integrity to those around us.
