00492 - The Gates Of The Old City

The gates of the old city of Jerusalem have such spiritual significance. Each gate has a distinct purpose, serving as a metaphor for our life. The Sheep Gate, for example, is traditionally associated with sacrifice and new beginnings, while the Fish Gate symbolises sustenance and livelihood.

Gates often symbolise opportunities, choices, and transitions. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says, "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." Just as each gate leads to different quarters in the city, the 'gates' of our hearts open up to different experiences. Guarding these gates means exercising discernment and being guided by wisdom and faith in what we let in and let out.

Our lives are filled with various ‘gates' — each requiring its own form of vigilance, each offering to enrich life's journey. Navigating the ‘gates’ of life well will bring a constant source of joy. Learn them well.
